Book Review: Hex on the Ex by Rochelle Staab

At a Dodgers game to celebrate her father's birthday, Liz's evening out with Nick and her family is a welcome break from renovating her new home. But there are a couple of people in the stadium she'd like to forget: her two-timing ex-friend in the stands, and her ex-husband, star relief pitcher Jarret, in the dugout.

All hell breaks loose when Jarret violates an old baseball superstition on his way to the mound, a game changer triggering a discouraging loss on the field and later a horrific murder-with Liz on deck as the prime suspect...

As usual Rochelle Staab leaves me happily content with her latest book in her "A Mind for Murder" series. I am a huge fan of this series and grow more fond of it with each book. "Hex on the Ex" has a great and intense plot, it also has its usual zany and loveable cast of characters from her previous books with a few new additions. In "Hex on the Ex" Murder strikes in a form from the past, and the heat is turned up on Dr. Liz Cooper when her Ex husband Jarret throws suspicion her way to cover his own assets--as if dealing with Jarret and his self absorbed and ego inflated demeanor wasn't enough already. Thank goodness for Nick and the rest of Liz's team backing in her corner... because newly minted LAPD detective of the Laurel Canyon department; Carla Pratt is hot on her tail to pin this hex of a murder on her! One this is for sure... there is more than one "blast from the past" in this book and you'll enjoy finding out just which one it is!

Book Review: Bruja Brouhaha By: Rochelle Staab

Liz and nick are enjoying the sixtieth wedding anniversary celebration for their charming hosts, Paco and Lucia Rojas, devout Santeria practitioners who own the historical Botanica Rojas near MacArthur Park. But the small group of friends is left horrified and confused when the evening ends in tragedy.

Devastated by loss, Lucia, a Santeria priestess, blames the locals for the escalating crime in her beloved community. She casts a vengeful hex on the neighborhood, leading strangers and friends alike to dub her bruja-Spanish for witch-and turn on the elderly woman. Lucia may be in harm's way, and it's up to Liz and Nick to unravel a mysterious disappearance and solve a murder before more lives are lost...

A great follow up to Rochelle's "Who Do, Voodoo?"! I had a feeling though, when I finished her first book that I would get happily stuck on her series of "Mind for Murder Mysteries"! As usual, she kept me turning pages and racing to the end to see if I my guess "who did it" would be right... and just like before she through me for a pleasant loop! I liked everything about the book, the setting, the usual suspects... I mean characters and of course some new friends that were added in this book. I was also happy to read about a new aspect of occult and loved the strong influence of Santeria had the plot, it made the book very rich and detailed. Thanks for another GREAT read Rochelle! I am now dieing to read whatever you come out with next!

Book Review: Who Do, Voodoo? By: Rochelle Staab

When Liz Cooper's friend Robin Bloom finds an unusual tarot card tacked to her front door, Liz writes it off as a prank. Robin refuses to ignore the omen her late husband drew the same card, the Three of Swords, in a reading the night before he was killed in car accident. As more cards and darker threats appear, Liz realizes someone very dangerous is upping the ante...

Liz turns to her brother's ex college roommate, occult expert Nick Garfield. As Nick leads her into the voodoo community to locate the origin of the deck, she can't ignore their attraction to each other. Then, a woman is found murdered and Robin becomes the prime suspect. Determined to clear her friend, Liz teams with Nick to unravel otherworldly secrets and seek help from beyond or risk being outwitted by a cunning killer...

Really awesome cozy mystery! And great for a first in a series! The book had me really guessing who the killer might be all the way till the end! I love the all the characters in the book and the witty charm of Dr. Liz Cooper! I also can't wait to see what the tarot cards hold in store for her and, one smoldering hot professor! All in all I am very intrigued by this series and I can't wait to see what Rochelle Staab will cook up next for us in her mysterious realm of magik!
